A place full of history

Colonia del Sacramento, the main hstorical area of Colonia, was founded as a town around the year 1680 by the Portuguese forces which had invaded the country during that époque. Many interesting constructions where added to the city during the XVII and XVIII centuries, and most of them remain unchanged to the date, being one of the main attractions of the town.

A World Heritage Site

Colonia del Sacramento was named World Heritage Site by the UNESCO due to the richness of its historic past and the antique constructions it has. Colonia del Sacramento is a town which maintains its original characteristics unchanged, in such a way that its streets are still made of stone bricks with street lamps at the sides of it and surrounded by unique colonial buildings.

The past

After being founded by the Portuguese around 1680, this city went through several other important historical events. A while after the Portuguese had settled in the town, the Spanish started fighting them for it. During this period of time, this town changed from being under the orders of the Portuguese to being under the orders of the Spanish several times until beginnings of the XIX century.

Historic events are one of the main attractions of Colonia del Sacramento, offering a past which can be almost breath while walking by its streets. It is a very peculiar place, home of some of the oldest constructions of Uruguay, and which offers an absolutely magical and charming environment
